Modernizing the Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety website for clarity, accessibility, and ease of use.

TUX Solutions was awarded the LADBS website redesign but lacked an internal design team. They brought in Irazu Studio to lead the UX/UI effort from scratch.
Our goal was to help modernize the Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety (LADBS) public website, a key portal for permits, inspections, and safety services. The site was outdated, difficult to navigate, and especially confusing for new users.
We focused on improving usability and accessibility, particularly for residents and contractors unfamiliar with complex city processes. The redesign needed to support a wide range of users, function well across devices, and maintain visual consistency throughout hundreds of information-heavy pages.
This first iteration served as a foundation for future platform updates and improvements.

We collaborated directly with TUX Solutions and LADBS stakeholders to define user needs, evaluate the current site, and create a scalable design system that development teams could apply consistently.
Reviewed and benchmarked other city/government platforms
Conducted interviews with LADBS agents and users
Used analytics to identify most-visited and high-friction pages
Reorganized content structure and removed redundancies
Created wireframes and responsive UI layouts
Built a clean, flexible visual system and component library

Highlights
We used Google Analytics to identify the most visited pages and user drop-off points. This helped us simplify paths and reduce unnecessary content.

Highlights
The redesigned homepage and IA allow users to access services more easily. We reduced menu clutter, clarified labels, and introduced intuitive visual groupings.

Highlights
We created a modular UI kit with consistent colors, typography, and reusable components that could support future expansions across all LADBS sections.

Over the course of the project, Irazu Studio provided TUX Solutions with a complete UX/UI redesign of the LADBS website, including new information architecture, wireframes, modular UI components, and a polished design system tailored for accessibility and trust.
After receiving final stakeholder approval, we handed off all design specifications and assets for development. The new LADBS site is now live and in use by the City of Los Angeles.
